Dick did well in the Army ROTC program at Wheaton College. In his senior year he was appointed the Brigade Commander for the 600 man brigade at Wheaton, responsible for the training of the entire brigade. He had a staff of seven cadet officers that carried out this responsibility. He was awarded the President's Medal for being the outstanding cadet.
Upon graduation, he was offered and accepted a Regular Army commission, equivalent to that offered graduates of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. He entered service immediately upon graduation from Wheaton College.
His first assignment was to attend the Basic Officer Course at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey for the Army Signal Corp. His Regular Army commission was delayed because of problems with clearance since he had been born and raised overseas, but he was immediately commissioned as a Reserve Officer in the Signal Corps instead of in the field of his choice, Artillery when that process was completed. This commission in the Regular Army was to be finalized while he was at the Signal school. |
